Returning to School Print E-mail

boy trying to concentrate at schoolReturning to school or college after someone special has died can be difficult even if you feel that you want to get back to see your friends or return to the familiar routine of going to school every day.

You will need to think about how you are going to tell people what has happened. You might think that you don't want to tell anyone but this is probably not a good idea as people will sense that something has happened and will ask questions, and you will find that you need to talk to people about it, including teachers and friends and possibly the school counsellor.

Talk to your parent and carer and arrange to visit your teacher before you return to school. Discuss how the students will be told, whether they will talk to the class before you return or tell them when you are back.

Decide whether you are ready to talk about it with your friends and let them know what it is ok and not ok to say. People often feel awkward talking to someone when someone has died, so don't wait for them to come to you; you tell them whether it is ok to talk about it or ask you questions and if not, let them know that you will talk to them when you feel ready and in your own time.
